Abstract

This study aimed to develop and test a structural model of marital adjustment based on social self-efficacy and cultural intelligence, with the mediating role of interaction skills among married women. This applied study employed a descriptive-correlational design using structural equation modeling. The statistical population comprised all married female students at the Tonekabon Branch of Islamic Azad University during the 2025–2026 academic year, from whom 200 participants were selected through multistage cluster random sampling. Data were collected using Spanier’s Dyadic Adjustment Scale (1976), Connolly’s Social Self-Efficacy Scale (1989), Ang et al.’s Cultural Intelligence Scale (2007), and Barton’s Interaction Skills Questionnaire (1990). Construct validity and reliability were assessed through confirmatory factor analysis, Cronbach’s alpha, composite reliability, and average variance extracted. The hypothesized model was examined using partial least squares structural equation modeling in SmartPLS. Social self-efficacy had significant positive effects on interaction skills (β=0.220, t=2.230) and marital adjustment (β=0.399, t=4.619). Cultural intelligence significantly predicted interaction skills (β=0.282, t=3.141), whereas its direct effect on marital adjustment was not significant (β=0.119, t=1.479). Interaction skills had a significant positive effect on marital adjustment (β=0.371, t=4.713). The indirect effect of social self-efficacy on marital adjustment through interaction skills was significant (β=0.082, t=2.677), indicating partial mediation. The indirect effect of cultural intelligence was also significant (β=0.105, t=2.918), indicating full mediation by interaction skills. The R² values for marital adjustment and interaction skills were 0.305 and 0.122, respectively, and the model GOF was 0.302. Social self-efficacy is associated with marital adjustment both directly and indirectly through interaction skills, whereas cultural intelligence contributes to marital adjustment primarily when translated into effective interpersonal interaction. Accordingly, interventions aimed at simultaneously enhancing social self-efficacy, cultural intelligence, and interaction skills may contribute to improving marital adjustment among married women.
