Abstract

The present study aimed to examine the relationship between affective styles and stress coping styles and the tendency toward infidelity among married students at the South Tehran Branch of Islamic Azad University. This study employed a descriptive-correlational and cross-sectional design. The statistical population consisted of all married students enrolled at the South Tehran Branch of Islamic Azad University during the 2025 academic year. Based on Cochran’s formula for an unlimited population, the minimum sample size was estimated at 384 participants, and finally 386 valid questionnaires were collected through purposive sampling and analyzed. Data were collected using the Affective Style Questionnaire developed by Hofmann and Kashdan, the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations developed by Endler and Parker, and a tendency toward infidelity questionnaire. The internal consistency of the instruments was examined using Cronbach’s alpha and was found to be acceptable. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson’s correlation coefficient in SPSS. The results showed a significant positive correlation between the overall affective style score and tendency toward infidelity (r = 0.62, p < 0.01). At the subscale level, emotional tolerance was significantly and negatively associated with tendency toward infidelity (r = -0.18, p < 0.01), whereas adjustment (r = -0.09, p > 0.05) and concealment (r = -0.08, p > 0.05) were not significantly related to infidelity tendency. The overall stress coping score was not significantly associated with tendency toward infidelity (r = 0.08, p > 0.05). Task-oriented coping showed a significant negative relationship with tendency toward infidelity (r = -0.10, p < 0.05), whereas avoidance-oriented coping showed a significant positive relationship (r = 0.11, p < 0.05). Emotion-oriented coping was not significantly associated with tendency toward infidelity (r = 0.01, p > 0.05). The findings indicate that specific affective and coping dimensions, particularly emotional tolerance, task-oriented coping, and avoidance-oriented coping, are associated with tendency toward infidelity; therefore, enhancing emotional tolerance and problem-focused coping while reducing avoidance patterns may be useful in preventive and couple-based interventions.
