Abstract

This study aimed to predict marital burnout based on early maladaptive schema domains and to examine the mediating role of marital empathy deficits among married women. This applied, descriptive-correlational study employed structural equation modeling and path analysis. The statistical population consisted of married women with symptoms of marital burnout who attended psychological, counseling, and family counseling centers in Tehran in spring 2026. A total of 250 participants were selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using the 75-item Young Schema Questionnaire, the Batson Empathy Adjective Scale, reverse-scored to assess marital empathy deficits, and the Pines Marital Burnout Measure. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 28 and AMOS version 24 through Pearson correlation, path analysis, and bootstrapping with 5,000 resamples. The structural model demonstrated an acceptable fit (χ²/df=2.381, RMSEA=.069, GFI=.941, CFI=.902, NFI=.930, IFI=.914, AGFI=.924, PGFI=.733). Disconnection/rejection (β=.269, p<.001) and overvigilance/inhibition (β=.198, p=.013) significantly and positively predicted marital empathy deficits. Disconnection/rejection (β=.402), impaired autonomy/performance (β=.215), other-directedness (β=.348), and overvigilance/inhibition (β=.232) exerted significant positive direct effects on marital burnout, whereas impaired limits had no significant direct effect. Marital empathy deficits significantly predicted greater marital burnout (β=.352, p<.001). Bootstrap analysis confirmed significant indirect effects of disconnection/rejection (β=.095) and overvigilance/inhibition (β=.070) on marital burnout through marital empathy deficits, whereas the indirect effects of impaired autonomy/performance, impaired limits, and other-directedness were nonsignificant. Overall, the predictors explained 48% of the variance in marital burnout. Marital empathy deficits constitute an important mechanism through which disconnection/rejection and overvigilance/inhibition schemas contribute to marital burnout. Accordingly, couple-based interventions targeting these maladaptive schemas while strengthening empathic capacities may help reduce marital burnout among married women.
